Specs and First Impressions

The M20 comes in single and double battery versions. I tested the double battery, which arrived separately but very well-packed. Assembly was a breeze (check out the unboxing and assembly video for reference):

Let’s get to the good stuff:

  • Stunning Frame: The aluminum frame is lightweight yet sturdy, with beautiful welds and a clever design. The green paint job pops in the sun! Keep in mind the weight limit is 120 kg.
  • Comfortable Ride: The handlebar height is perfect, and the 750W motor packs a serious punch. It can be a bit much at times, but hey, power is good!
  • Double Battery Power: Two batteries mean a longer range – around 50 kilometers on assist level 2 with both batteries engaged. On higher assist levels without pedaling, the mileage drops significantly (more on that later).
  • Removable Batteries: The batteries are easy to remove and charge, and each has a handy power indicator. Plus, there’s a USB port for on-the-go gadget charging!

Aesthetics and Features
  • Mag Wheels and Tires: These look fantastic and provide great support for the all-terrain tires. They make a cool sound when cruising at high speeds!
  • Full-Throttle: The throttle is well-made and comfortable to use. There might be a slight delay in acceleration for some riders, but it felt responsive to me.
  • Monochrome Display: Easy to use and bright even on sunny days, it shows speed, distance, and trip information. The cables are neatly organized for a clean look.
  • Dual LED Headlights: These have a low beam that’s always on for safety and are super bright at night. The headlight switch doubles as a horn button for easy access. There’s also a taillight with brake lights.
  • Suspension and Saddle: The front fork adjusts for your riding style, and the saddle is comfy (though the height isn’t adjustable).
Things to Consider
  • Brakes: While the Wuxing mechanical brakes work, hydraulic brakes would be a better fit for such a powerful bike.
  • Headlight On/Off: There’s no way to turn off the headlights, which can drain the battery. A display indicator for the headlight would be helpful.
  • Cruise Control and Horn: These would be great additions! The current horn could be louder too.

Battery Life and Performance

With both batteries and pedal assist level 2 or 3, I managed an impressive 102 kilometers!
However, using higher assist levels without pedaling drains the battery much faster. These batteries are designed to work together and automatically switch when one runs out.
It takes about 6 hours to recharge a battery with the included charger.

Important Notes
  • The Engwe M20 is still usable as a regular bike when the batteries die, but taller riders (above 180 cm) might find it awkward.
  • The 7-speed Shimano Derailleur is great for pedaling, but less useful at higher speeds (typical for high-powered e-bikes). The motor helped me reach speeds of 43 km/h.
  • The bike can handle inclines up to 10 degrees. We tried steeper slopes (around 25 degrees) off-road, but it didn’t have enough power.
  • The rear suspension is perfect for my weight (81 kg) and absorbs bumps well. It’s not top-of-the-line, but it gets the job done.
  • The aluminum fenders are sturdy and effective.
  • The hidden controller is well-placed and quiet.
