Exploring the Virgo Integral Helmet by The Beam:
A Step Forward in EV Safety
Today, we’re stepping slightly outside the world of e-bikes to explore something equally exciting in the electric vehicle space—a brand-new product from The Beam: the Virgo Integral Helmet.
Before diving into the features, pros, and cons of this innovative helmet, let’s address the elephant in the room. After publishing my initial video about reviewing helmets from The Beam, I received several messages from viewers expressing frustration about not receiving their orders. My journey with The Beam started over a year ago when they first launched the Virgo project. Communication went quiet for quite some time, but a couple of weeks ago, they reached out to see if I was still interested in reviewing the Virgo Helmet. Naturally, I agreed—on the condition that I could share my honest thoughts.
It took a couple of weeks to get the helmet shipped from France to Poland, but it’s finally here. According to The Beam, they’ve faced some shipping delays, but things are getting back on track now. I’ve even seen a few people using these helmets already, so I don’t believe it was a scam—just a series of setbacks that seem to have been resolved. Now, let’s see if the Virgo Helmet lives up to its hype!
First Impressions and Design
The Virgo helmet arrived securely packed and well-protected, so no complaints there. After attaching the magnetic rear light, it was ready to go. With the blue visor in place, it looks incredibly sleek and stylish!
This full-face helmet is designed and certified specifically for e-bike and electric vehicle users, accommodating speeds of up to 45 km/h. If you’re planning to ride faster than that, you’ll need a more robust full-face helmet for higher-speed protection.
The Virgo helmet stands out as one of the first helmets purpose-built for e-bikes—a fantastic step forward in safety and design for the EV community.
Features and Performance
The Virgo helmet weighs just 794 grams with the visor and rear light installed, making it impressively lightweight. After weeks of use, I can barely feel it on my head! Thanks to the open front gap, it offers excellent visibility and airflow, feeling more like an open-face helmet. Riding in autumn with temperatures around zero degrees, I’ve been keeping the visor down to shield against the wind—and I plan to order their ear protection soon!
The helmet’s design allows for natural movement, letting me look around and turn my head easily. In fact, I even managed to enjoy a bowl of soup while wearing it! For reference, I have a small head, so I went with size M, and it fits perfectly. At first, I thought I wouldn’t get my head in—it looks tight, and the chin section is quite sturdy—but once it’s on, it feels comfortable. I can even wear a winter mask and glasses with no issues.
The helmet features a simple locking system and an additional rear adjustment knob, similar to standard bicycle helmets, making it easy to get the perfect fit. The visor not only looks great but also provides effective wind and sun protection. They offer additional visors as separate purchases, and while there’s minimal distortion, I think it would benefit from a dedicated touchpoint for lifting and lowering, like on motorcycle helmets.
Key Safety Features
One of my favorite features is the open-ear design. It lets me hear traffic and carry on conversations while still providing solid side and chin protection. This is important to me because last year, I had a bike crash going under 20 km/h, and my old helmet—with ear protection—saved my right ear. That experience made me more mindful of safety when choosing helmets.
The magnetic, “smart” rear light is another standout feature. It’s bright and includes braking lights with two or three modes.
However, I’m still figuring out how it works—it seems to turn off automatically after a while, which is both intriguing and slightly puzzling.
Areas for Improvement
Of course, there are a few drawbacks. The cheek pads are small and attached with Velcro, which makes wearing the helmet a bit uneasy.
They tend to shift when putting the helmet on, and I’m concerned they might detach entirely.
Additionally, the helmet lacks smart functions like integrated phone calls or GPS guidance. The Beam plans to introduce wireless communication devices soon, but for now, this feature is missing.
Lastly, the chin section isn’t fully certified yet. While it offers substantial protection and is certainly better than nothing, riders seeking a full-face helmet with robust chin protection might want to consider other options.
