Engwe M1

Engwe M1 Review

A Bigger, Better Fat-Tire E-Bike Built for Fun and Utility

This is the ENGWE M1 — a fat-tire electric bike with bold looks, full suspension, and room for one or two batteries… and why not two people too?
It’s built to carry gear, ride in comfort, and turn heads wherever you go.
Now, I’m not here to claim this is the perfect e-bike — but I’ll give you all the details you need to decide if it’s the right one for you!

The M1 arrived very well-packed, and assembly was easy. If you want a closer look, you can watch my full assembly tutorial right here!

First Impressions

The ENGWE M1 looks and feels much bigger in person than it does on Engwe’s website.
Thanks to its large saddle, fat tires, powerful motor, and plenty of space for carrying gear, the M1 delivers a comfortable, fun ride right out of the gate.

Specifications:

  • Motor: 750-watt rear hub motor with 65Nm of torque
  • Top Speed: 25 km/h out of the box (unlocks to 46.7 km/h!
  • Battery: Dual 48V batteries — 15.6Ah + 13Ah = 28.6Ah total
  • Range: Claimed 170 km at assist level 1; I got 123 km at levels 3–4
  • Gears: Shimano Tourney 7-speed
  • Gears: Shimano Tourney 7-speed
  • Weight: 53 kg (dual battery, no accessories)
  • Payload Capacity: 150 kg
  • Rider Height Range: 160–190 cm

The pedal assist kicks in quickly, making it easy to ride without relying on the throttle — perfect if you still want to get some exercise along the way!

And if you run out of battery?
No problem. Thanks to its longer frame and saddle, pedaling the M1 back home is manageable — something that’s rare for moped-style e-bikes.
Though, once you hit around 28–29 km/h, ghost pedaling becomes inevitable.

Design & Frame

At first glance, you might think the M1’s aluminum frame looks similar to the Engwe M20 — but trust me, they’re quite different.

The M1 is bigger, longer, and sturdier. The welds look solid, and it’s clear Engwe designed this bike to be accessory-ready.
Unlike the M20, the M1 can actually carry a lot of stuff!

I opted for the full accessory package, including:
– Central storage box: Made from aluminum, it fits securely around the battery and can even hold a small laptop.
– Front rack: Compact but strong, perfect for light cargo.
– Mirrors, heavy-duty lock, and a bike cover: All well-made and durable.

Pro Tip: Installing the storage box is a bit tricky — it requires removing the saddle, cutting a few zip ties, opening the controller compartment, and removing the battery tray. So be prepared to spend a little time on that.

Suspension & Ride Quality

The M1 is a dual-suspension e-bike, and honestly — it rides great!

– Rear suspension: Solid and effective at absorbing bumps.
– Front fork: Basic, with no adjustments and a somewhat soft feel.

I would’ve loved to see a higher-quality fork here — maybe even the same one used on the M20!
Still, the combination makes for a comfortable, stable ride on city streets.

Pros:

– Large, sturdy frame
– Impressive battery range
– Powerful 750W motor with 65Nm torque
– Comfortable saddle — great for two riders
– Bright integrated lights
– Hydraulic brakes with motor cutoff
– Unlockable top speed
– Tons of great accessories
– Practical storage box

Cons:

– Front fork could be better
– Batteries could be even bigger
– It’s heavy and not easy to carry

Cockpit & Controls

The cockpit layout is simple, clean, and comfortable:
– Left side: Front brake, light control, display buttons, and a surprisingly good horn.
– Center: Bright and colorful LCD display showing speed, battery level, and lights (though it doesn’t show if turn signals are active — I kept forgetting to turn them off!).
– Right side: Rear brake, gear shifter, and thumb throttle.
– Grips: Decent quality rubber grips — comfortable enough for long rides.

Brakes & Lights

Stopping power is delivered by dual hydraulic disc brakes with 160 mm rotors.
They’re not branded, but they get the job done well and include:
– Motor cut-off sensors
– Brake lights for extra safety

The headlight is large and powerful — perfect for night rides — and the taillight offers brake and turn signal functions.

Tires, Saddle & Ride Comfort

The M1 rolls on 20×4” city fat tires that offer a smooth, quiet ride.
They’re fantastic for urban riding — though not ideal for hardcore off-road adventures.
The plastic fenders keep you clean and dry even on rainy days.

And the saddle?
Huge, comfortable, and perfect for carrying a passenger — complete with foot pegs.
Other small but smart touches include neatly organized cables, a sealed controller under the saddle, and a rubber protector on the front fork.

Final Thoughts

It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Engwe bikes, and the M1 definitely doesn’t disappoint.
You can tell Engwe listened to feedback from the M20 and brought real improvements to this bigger, better model.

If you’re looking for a fun, practical, and powerful e-bike that can carry gear and a buddy along for the ride — the Engwe M1 might be exactly what you need.
