Engwe L20 3.0 Pro

Engwe’s high-profile folding electric bike

Today I want to share my thoughts on the Engwe L20 3.0 Pro, Engwe’s high-profile folding electric bike that’s been getting a lot of attention in the commuter e-bike space.

Why Pro? Honestly, I’m not entirely sure — but if I had to guess, it’s because of the powerful motor, the Samsung battery, solid build quality, and the impressive level of app integration.
But is it all good? Let’s find out.

Engwe L20 3.0 Pro

First impressions & ride feel

When I first saw the bike, I wasn’t convinced it would be particularly fun to ride. On paper, it looked practical, maybe even a bit utilitarian. But the moment I took it out for my first ride, the L20 proved me completely wrong.

This is an EU-legal e-bike, meaning:
– No throttle
– A 250-watt motor
– Assistance capped at 25 km/h

That said, the Mivice X700 mid-drive motor from Mivice is seriously impressive. It delivers up to 100 Nm of torque, which is outstanding for city riding and hill climbing.
I weigh 81 kg, and honestly, I couldn’t find a hill steep enough to challenge this bike. You still have to pedal — just like a regular bicycle — but thanks to the torque sensor, the ride feels incredibly natural. Push harder, and the bike responds immediately with more power. Ease off, and it smoothly backs down.
Some riders mention a slight half-second delay when starting to pedal, but I personally don’t feel that at all. Maybe I received an updated version. Either way, if you’re looking for a “no-pedaling” e-bike, this isn’t it, and that’s actually a good thing. I still get a proper workout, and I really enjoy that.

Specifications:

  • Motor: 250W – Mivice X700 Mid-Drive, 48V
  • Top Speed: 25 km/h
  • Battery: 48V 15Ah (720Wh), Samsung 21700 Cells with BMS
  • Range: Up to 160 km (eco mode)
  • Gears: Shimano Tourney 7-speed
  • Brakes: Hydraulic, 180mm rotors
  • Weight: 32.8kg
  • Smart Features: Built-in GPS, 4G, Bluetooth, and over-the-air updates via the Engwe App
  • Rider Height Range: 155–190 cm

Battery, range & charging

Powering that motor is a removable 48V, 15Ah Samsung battery. You can charge it either on or off the bike, which is great for apartment living.
Engwe claims a maximum range of up to 160 km. Unfortunately, it’s too cold right now for a full range test, but I did manage a solid real-world check.
– First ride: 22 km

– Battery used: 16%
– Assist levels: mostly 4 and 5

Based on that, I’d realistically expect around 130 km of range, which is excellent for a commuter-focused e-bike.
One standout feature is the 8A fast charger, which fully charges the battery in about two hours. Even better, you can control the charging speed via the app to help extend the battery’s lifespan, a very thoughtful and genuinely useful feature.

And if you do run out of battery? No problem. Thanks to the 7-speed Shimano Tourney drivetrain from Shimano, pedaling home without assistance isn’t nearly as painful as you might expect. I can fully extend my legs for efficient pedaling, and riding unassisted really isn’t that bad.

Comfort & practicality

Comfort is another strong point.
The step-through frame makes getting on and off incredibly easy and accessible for almost anyone. The frame feels solid, the welds are clean, and it’s impressively sturdy for a folding bike. Folding it is straightforward once you’ve done it a couple of times.
Thanks to the frame design, adjustable handlebar height, and full plastic fenders that keep you clean and dry, this bike is not just comfortable, it’s genuinely practical for daily commuting.

You also get:
– A rear rack rated for 25 kg
– A front basket mount if you need even more carrying capacity

Specs-wise:
– Rider height: 155 cm – 190 cm
– Max load: 150 kg
– Weight: 34 kg with battery installed

Yes, it’s heavy — carrying it upstairs isn’t fun — but that’s the trade-off for a solid frame, suspension, and big battery.

Suspension, tires & ride quality

The 20 x 3-inch puncture-proof tires add stability and confidence, especially on rough city streets.

To maintain that “Pro” comfort level, the L20 comes with front and rear suspension. Both work reasonably well, but here’s where I expected a bit more:
– The front suspension is too soft for my taste
– No adjustments available — only lock or unlock
– The rear suspension isn’t adjustable either, but it does its job

The saddle is basic and soft, and honestly? It’s not bad at all for daily riding.

Brakes, lights & controls

Another strong “Pro” feature is the hydraulic braking system with 180 mm rotors. The brakes are powerful, quiet, and easy to modulate with just two fingers.
Stopping power is excellent.

There are no motor cut-off sensors on the brakes, but since there’s no throttle, that doesn’t bother me at all.
My only real complaint here is the “intelligent” brake light. It works — but sometimes it turns on even when I’m not braking. It’s not a dealbreaker, just a bit annoying.
The bike does come with fully integrated lights, and the headlight is genuinely good for night riding.

The 680 mm handlebar folds, making storage and transport easier.

– Left side: front brake + display controls
– Center: full-color display
– Right side: rear brake + gear shifter

The rubber grips feel comfortable and well-finished.

Smart tech & app integration

What really pushes this bike into Pro territory is the smart technology.
The Engwe IoT module offers GPS, 4G, and Bluetooth connectivity, taking app integration to a level you rarely see at this price point. The app provides:
– Detailed ride data
– Remote locking
– GPS tracking
– Anti-theft alerts
– Charging speed control

Once the bike is locked, if anyone touches it, I immediately receive a notification on my phone. I can locate, lock, and track the bike remotely, which is incredibly reassuring for city use.

One thing to keep in mind:
– The anti-theft system works for a limited time without the battery
– If the battery stays unused in the bike, it will slowly drain
Not a dealbreaker,  just something to be aware of.
